Default A "Lend" option

Hi folks,

I ran the search and didn't see this show up, so I figured I'd do the responsible thing and start a conversation I don't intend to finish.

Occasionally, people like to do things other than kill monsters, guild lords, and random people who magically appeared behind a door on the other side of a lake. I don't see why... blowing things up is really fun... but that's not the point! Occasionally, people form large groups with the sole purpose of turning into char form and "invading" ascalon. Or tricking others into thinking that kneeling in front of a pig will turn you into an elf (some poor sap worshiped that pig for nearly 15 minutes).

These activities typically require various forms of valuable merchandise e.g. everlasting char tonic, elf tonics, etc. They also require a great deal of trust. Trust that is severely lacking or non-existent in many online environments.

There exist at least two non do-nothing solutions to this issue:

1) Make everybody trustworthy.

2) Eliminate the trust requirement.

Option one can usually only be accomplished in small tightly knit populations where everyone knows where everyone else lives and has ready access to either assult rifles, blackmail or ex-girl/boy-friends. This can also be accomplished through collateral, but if everyone could afford the merchandise to start with we wouldn't have this issue.

This post will focus on option 2.

Typically, previously mentioned "parties" form with the following party dynamic: there is one "rich guy" and several "peons" that wish to amuse said "rich guy". If said "rich guy" is an agreeable sort, the said "peons" should also get some entertainment value from the ensuing "party". Said "rich guy" then has to jury rig some form of acceptable lending agreement with said "peons". Currently, these lending agreements tend to hinge heavily on the "honor system".

I would like to instead implement the "Lending System". A lend button. Next to the trade button. Not in the same button to prevent confusion.

The lend system would work much like the trade system with a few important differences: Items lent cannot be traded, sold, salvaged, or modified in anyway. In the lenders inventory, the item would be replaced with an IOU. This item would record the item that was lent, to whom it was lent, and the duration remaining until the item returns. The "lend duration" would be specified at the time of lending. At the end of this time, the item would leave the lendee's inventory and replace the IOU's current location at which time the IOU is destroyed.

In this fashion, the lender has power over the items location until such a time as the lender wishes to relinquish that power. If the lender trades the IOU to the lendee, the item is effectively the property of the lendee. At this time, the IOU could be destoyed buy double clicking the IOU and selecting the item.

Anyway, that should be enough to trigger some healthy discussion of the topic, so I'll leave you all to it.

Regular tonics are what you give to people you don't know or trust.

you sound like a lawyer. /nontrustworthy

Well, u cant give people reindeer tonics, or let them sport around your high-end minis/weapons/etc.

I do however think that the guy lending the stuff gets the option to take it back any time via a click on the "greyed out" item in your storage/inventory that is lent out.

I like your idea, maybe consider posting it on the GW2 forums. The IOU thing is kind of troublesome imo.

Maybe have a new "Lend" window that lists all of your lent out weapons and the people who are currently using them.

Timers and a Return now option, not sure how it would work for weapons...would be funny if you were at the HoH and all of a sudden you have no weapons

Good idea,

I was thinking the same thing. Would suck to be in an MAT final and have a weapon you are using "returned." But then again there is a thing i like to use when lending things out, its called collateral...Also, i think this is a good idea but way to time consuming and technical to justify implementing it.

This probably won't work for the same reason an auction system doesn't: inability to manipulate data dealing with offline characters.

Sounds like an awesome idea though.

If we're all able to just share an everlasting tonic, that just cheapens the whole thing. If you don't trust people enough to trade them your tonic, they shouldn't be able to benefit from it.

Although it may be fun, it would be a lot of work for a small Live Team. And that work would only be used to a small degree. Everlasting tonics are increasing in abundance as time goes on. More are obtained from the zchest daily. Outside of a few exceptions there will be a drop in price as time goes by. And since it is a 'silly' thing to trade, it has no value for the game. I'd be more concerned about possible bugs and eploits that would be found with it.

But even though I'm not supposed to say it.... "It won't happen".

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you want a lend system for the sole purpose of lending out everlasting tonics so that everyone can use them? The pretty green font is there for a reason, to show that the item is rare.

if people share why should they buy...ruins teh market just like RS that I'm sure sparked this idea...Don't play but from what I hear from a friend the lend option made it harder to sell some items as people would share them around...harder to sell means lowered prices...means bad economically...

On a side note....he also mentioned how quickly people figured out how to exploit it for duping...not that we talk to each other about such things...

/notsigned due to it possible RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GOing up an already bad economy...
and /notsigned because anet will RED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GORED ENGINE GO it up and not properly test it *points at shayne* and it will end up all buggy

There are far, FAR better things for Anet to do with it's time than code and debug stuff like this. Talk to me when Dervishes and Mesmers get buffed to usefulness and we don't have bugs like that unvanquishable area to worry about.
